The Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Texas Southern Tigers face off in Monday college basketball action in the Legends Classic.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders started their season with two wins but suffered their first defeat of the year last time out against Alabama. Tubby Smith’s team as some work to do as they have a tough out of conference schedule coming up before starting what looks to be a brutal Big 12 schedule. Robert Turners is Texas Tech’s leading scorer averaging 15.7 points per game. Jordan Tolbert averages 14.7 points and 8.7 rebounds, Jaye Crockett averages 11 points and 6.0 rebounds, and Dusty Hannahs is averaging 8.7 points. Texas Tech is averaging 76 points per game and they are shooting 50.5 percent from the floor, 32.2 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and 59.4 percent from the free throw line while their opponents average 68.3 points and shoot 44.4 percent.

The Texas Southern Tigers opened their season with two wins but since then they have dropped their last two games. Tony Harvey’s team could be competitive in the SWAC this season but with Stanford, Temple, and others on the schedule before conference play begins they might be in for some tough learning experiences. Aaric Murray, the transfer from West Virginia, leads Texas Southern averaging 23.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as well as 4.8 blocks. Jose Rodriguez averages 17 points and 8.0 rebounds, Ray Penn averages 15.2 points and 6.8 assists, and Lawrence Johnson-Danner averages 10.5 points. Texas Southern is averaging 77.3 points per game as they are shooting 46.1 percent from the floor, 41.8 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and 71.3 percent from the free throw line while their opponents average 79 points and shoot 46.8 percent.
Texas Tech is 7-19 against the spread in their last 26 non-conference games and 1-4 against the spread in their last five Monday games. Texas Southern is 4-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record and 6-2 against the spread in their last eight road games against a team with a home winning percentage greater than .600.
Texas Southern isn’t getting a lot of love here as the point spread has already moved two points from the open but I look for the Tigers to at the very least keep it close and possibly pull the outright upset.
