The Butler Bulldogs and the Vanderbilt Commodores face off on Tuesday to start off the day’s college basketball action.
The Butler Bulldogs have become a known commodity in the college basketball world and they are off to a 2-0 start this season. In their first year in the New Big East Butler’s schedule is going to be much tougher than what they have faced in recent years. Kellen Dunham leads Butler averaging 19.5 and 4.5 rebounds per game. Khyle Marshall is averaging 11.5 points and 8.5 rebounds, Kameron Woods is averaging 11 points and 8.5 rebounds, and Erik Fromm is averaging 10 points. Butler is averaging 79.5 points and they are shooting 49.2 percent from the floor, 31.7 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and 62.2 percent from the free throw line while defensively they allow 62.5 points per game and their opponents shoot 44.2 percent. Butler hasn’t taken the easy way out in their out of conference schedule.

The Vanderbilt Commodores are off to a 2-0 start to the season but the expectations are muted for Kevin Stallings team this season. Vandy has a ton of talent but they are a little light on experience heading into this season. Rod Odom is leading the Commodores averaging 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. Eric McClellan is averaging 15.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists, James Siakam is averaging 12 points and 7.5 rebounds, and Kyle Fuller is averaging 10.5 points and 6.5 assists. Vanderbilt averages 83 points per game and they are shooting 54.5 percent from the floor, 46.2 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and 59.4 percent from the free throw line while their opponents are shooting 43 percent and averaging 74.5 points per game.
Butler is 13-3 against the spread following a game in which they didn’t cover the point spread, 4-1 against the spread in their last five Tuesday games, and 6-2 against the spread against the SEC. Vanderbilt is 5-1 against the spread in their last six non-conference games, 4-1 against the spread in their last five games, and 5-2 against the spread against a team with a winning record.
Butler is favored by six in this one and that seems to be a lot in a game which looks to be closer to a toss up. While I give Butler an edge straight up I am going with Vandy and the points.
