The Line: Duke Blue Devils -25.5 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
The Duke Blue Devils square off against the East Carolina Pirates in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off from Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The sixth-ranked Duke Blue Devils continued their blistering start to the season after cruising to an easy 91-55 victory over UNC Asheville in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip Off on Monday night. Duke, who improved 3-1 with their victory over the Bulldogs, have been on a tear offensively to start the season, averaging a whopping 95.5 points per game thus far, which is the 11th best mark in the nation. The Blue Devils are also shooting a remarkable 58 percent from the floor in four games, which ranks third nationally. A big reason for their fast start has been the play of first-year sensation Jabari Parker, who became the first freshman under coach Mike Krzyzewski to start a career with three straight 20-point games.
The East Carolina Pirates are also off to a fast start this season, managing to hold off Norfolk State in the opening round on Monday to improve to 4-0 on the season. To be fair, two of the Pirates wins so far have come against division two opponents and there other two wins have been by a combined three points. Needless to say, coach Jeff Lebo would be pleased with the way his young team has started the season, especially on the offensive end. ECU ranks in the top 40 nationally in points per game (88.3,) assists (16.8) and rebounds (43.3) while shooting 47 percent from the field. The Pirates are led by pair of guards in Paris Roberts-Campbell and Akeem Richmond, who lead the team in the scoring with 16 points apiece.
The Blue Devils are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games, 5-0 ATS in their last 5 home games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Pirates on the other hand are 9-4-1 ATS in their last 14 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600, 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games and 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 road games.
Given how Duke have beaten up on lesser opponents this season, I would expect this line to be north of 25 points when it is released. Don't let the Pirates record fool you, this is a very young an inexperienced team that will be out of their depths against a far superior team in the Blue Devils.
There is the potential for a back door cover here because ECU does shoot a lot of three's, especially Akeem Richmond, who attempted 16 in their win over Norfolk State. Despite this, I simply can't look past how dominate the Blue Devils have looked over lesser opponents, which is exactly what the Pirates are
