The New Mexico Lobos and the UAB Blazers face off on Thursday afternoon in Charleston for the Charleston Tip-Off.
The New Mexico Lobos are off to a 2-0 start and are ranked 19th in the nation. UNM appears to have a strong team but they have faced weak competition thus far beating Alabama A&M and Charleston Southern. Cameron Bairstow leads New Mexico averaging 25.5 points per game and 8.0 rebounds. Alex Kirk is averaging 20 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks, Kendall Williams is averaging 18.5 points and 8.5 assists, and Cullen Neal is averaging 11.5 points and 4.5 assists. New Mexico is averaging 98.5 points per game and they are shooting 59.1 percent from the floor, 41.9 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and 65.9 percent from the free throw line while their opponents are averaging 72.5 points and are shooting 37.4 percent. Craig Neal is in his first year coaching the Lobos after Steve Alford left for UCLA.

The UAB Blazers are off to a 3-0 start but they have played the 169th ranked schedule in the nation thus far. Mike Davis’ team has had no problems most recently knocking off Rutgers and Troy. C.J. Washington leads the Blazers averaging 20 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Chad Frazier averages 12 points and 6.7 rebounds, Rod Rucker averages 11.7 points and 8.3 rebounds, and Faro Alihodzic averages 10.7 points and 9.0 rebounds. UAB averages 80 points per game and they are shooting 46 percent from the floor, 25.9 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and 76.5 percent from the free throw line. UAB has been pounding the offensive boards and they will need to do so in this one to win as well.
New Mexico is 9-3 against the spread in their last 12 neutral site games, 42-19-2 against the spread in their last 63 games, and 1-6-1 against the spread against Conference USA. UAB is 7-20 against the spread in their last 27 non-conference games, 6-18 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 0-7 against the spread in their last seven games.
UAB has a chance to keep this one close by getting after the rebounds and it is just a lean but I see them covering the spread here.
