The 1-3 William and Mary Tribe visit the Louis Brown Athletic Center to face the 3-2 Rugers Scarlet Knights Saturday afternoon at 2PM.
William and Mary fell to 1-3 this past week with a loss against High Point 80-69. The contest got out of hand early as a High Point run sparked a double digit lead that they never relinquished. The Tribe never got it much closer despite playing pretty solidly in the 2nd half. Marcus Thornton and Tim Rusthoven combined for 38 points to pace the Tribe, but William and Mary managed to only hit 10 of their 29 three points attempts. Making things more difficult, the Tribe shot it just 59% from the line -- a usual strength of their team. The loss makes it two in a row in what has been a bumpy start to the year.
Rutgers fell to 3-2 this past week as they were beaten fairly handedly at home by a solid Drexel team. The Dragons won the rebounding battle and shot it 47% from deep -- key factors in their win. Rutgers struggled from the field hitting just 26% from their threes and 61% of their free throws. Kadeem Jack led the Scarlet Knights with 13 points, but key contributors like Myles Mack and Jerome Seagers struggled to put the ball in the basket -- a big problem for a team that is thin to start with. With the loss, the Scarlet Knights now rank 238th in the nation in assists per game (12 per game). Rutgers will need improved play at the point and better distribution of the basketball if they want to avoid continued struggles during the easy portion of their schedule.
Some trends to consider -- William and Mary is 3-1-1 against the spread in their last 5 road games and Rutgers is 3-9 against the spread in their last 12 home games.
Rutgers has the talent and athleticism to dispose of William & Mary pretty easily but the Scarlet Knights have done nothing thus far this year to show that they can put together a complete game from start to finish. I like William & Mary to hang around for awhile in this one and the Rutgers team defense and post presence to be the difference late as the Scarlet Knights get the win, but the Tribe steal the cover on the road.
