The Illinois-Chicago Flames face the San Diego Torreros in a Gulf Coast Showcase first round match up.

Illinois-Chicago lost three starters from a year ago and they miss them with a 1-3 mark in the early saying as much. The Flames need to control the scoreboard while finding some offense themselves but failed to do either in a 93-58 loss to Northwestern as a 3.5 point under dog. The Wildcats were red hot from the field at nearly 61% with UIC checking in at 29% which negated eleven more attempts by the Flames which made the Wildcats 13 more baskets decisive. Jordan Harks was one of two double digit scorers with 13 points and eleven rebounds with Kelsey Barlow adding ten points with Mark Brown chipping in with seven.

David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

I don't know where San Diego fits in the WCC but they have been slowly improving which is difficult to do in a very top heavy conference. A 5-0 start to the season is something not normally associated with USD basketball but that's the result of decent scoring and defense. Both ends of the floor were at their best in an 82-46 decision over San Diego Christian. The Torreros burned the nets with almost 51% shooting with the Hawks held to only 26%. The result was 19 more baskets for San Diego with four players cracking double figures in scoring. Thomas Jacobs tossed in 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds with Duda Sanadze adding 13 points and five yanks while Jito Kok and Johnny Lee combined for 21 points.

I think San Diego has taken a few steps in the right direction as far as being competitive is concerned. No line is available but I expect the Torreros to be favored...(Line is out but San Diego as a decent size favoite is a bit unheard of)
