The Syracuse Orange and the Minnesota Golden Gophers face off on Monday in Maui in college basketball action.
The Syracuse Orange are off to a 4-0 start and while they haven’t faced much in the way of competition they are ranked number seven in the nation. Jim Boeheim once again has a loaded team that can play defense and bang the boards. C.J. Fair is averaging 18 points and 5.5 rebounds per game to pace the Orange. Trevor Cooney is averaging 12.8 points and 3 steals, Jerami Grant is averaging 11.7 points, and Tyler Ennis is averaging 7.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. Syracuse is averaging 74 points per game while they are shooting 42.9 percent from the floor, 31.8 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and 61.7 percent from the free throw line while defensively they are allowing 58.5 points per game and their opponents shoot 40.4 percent from the floor.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers are off to a 5-0 start this season and while on paper it appears to be a weak schedule that they have played thus far, it really has been more in the middle of the road. Richard Pitino is in his first year in Minnesota and he inherits a fairly talented team that went to the NCAA Tournament last season. Andre Hollins is averaging 18.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game to lead the Gophers. Austin Hollins is averaging 13.2 points and 7.8 rebounds, Joey King is questionable but he is averaging 10.2 points, and Oto Osenieks is averaging 10 points and 4.8 rebounds. Minnesota is averaging 80 points per game and they are shooting 44.2 percent from the floor, 34.1 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and 74.6 percent from the free throw line while defensively they are allowing 61.6 points per game and their opponents shoot 38.9 percent.
Syracuse is 2-5 against the spread against the Big Ten. Minnesota is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games, 3-7-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 2-5-1 against the spread in their last eight neutral site games.
The odds makers are dialed in on this one as it is right about where I had it before the odds were posted but I was hoping to get a few extra points because of the East Coast bias and the backing of the Cuse nationally but no such luck. Because I am not getting the extra points I can only believe my numbers are off and getting the point with the Gophers is where the value is here and where I will be going for the pick, though probably won’t be going anywhere with my wallet in this one.
