The 20th-ranked Creighton Blue Jays face a stiff test when they take on the Arizona State Sun Devils Thursday in the Wooden Legacy Tournament in Fullerton.
Creighton comes in at 4-0 behind the stellar play of senior 6-8 F Doug McDermott, who recorded his fourth straight game with 20 or more points in the Blue Jay’s last outing, an 82-72 win over Tulsa last Saturday in Omaha. McDermott, who leads the team in scoring at 27.5 ppg and rebounds at 8.0 per contest, had a game high 33 points on 52 percent from the field, snagged 15 rebounds and hit 12 of 15 free throws. It was also McDermott’s 16th career 30-point game. Junior G Austin Chatman added 19 points and 9 assists and hit 4 of 5 from beyond the arc. The Blue Jays have been an offensive machine on the season, ranking 9th nationally at 92 ppg and 8th in the country at 53 percent shooting.

The Sun Devils at 6-0, meanwhile, are eyeing a spot in the top 25 and would likely get there with a win here after taking out #25 Marquette 79-77 at home Monday. Sophomore G Jahii Carson had a game-high 23 points on 52 percent from the field and hit 3 of 5 from downtown, while senior C Jordan Bachynnski, who blocked a shot at the buzzer to help preserve the win, recorded his sixth straight double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds on 75 percent from the field. The Sun Devils shot 53 percent from the floor, 45 percent from distance and hit 11 of 16 from the line. Carson leads the team in scoring with 23 ppg on 54 percent from the field and 56 percent from beyond the arc.
The line in this one is currently set at -3.5 for Creighton and it really does look like a toss-up, but Arizona State gets the lean by virtue of a tougher opening schedule and defeating a ranked opponent.
