Top-ranked Michigan State looks to extend its 74-game unbeaten streak against unranked non-conference opponents when they host Mount St. Mary’s Friday.
The undefeated Spartans followed their win over then #1 Kentucky Nov. 12 with lackluster efforts against Columbia and Portland in which they needed late surges to pull away from subpar competition. In the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Championship game against Oklahoma last Saturday, Michigan State needed a career game from its third leading scorer, senior G Keith Appling, to shake the pesky Sooners for the 87-76 victory. Appling, who was named the tournament MVP, had career-best 27 points on 66 percent from the field and hit 10 of 14 from the free throw line to help the Spartans take home the title. Sophomore G Gary Harris added 21 points on 46 percent shooting and junior G Branden Dawson added 18 points and 10 rebounds. Michigan State shot 50 percent from the field, 31 percent from distance and hit 23 of 36 from the line. On the season, Harris leads the Spartans in scoring with 17.7 ppg and senior C Adreian Payne averages 17.2 ppg.

Mount St. Mary’s comes into the game with a record of 2-5 and off of their second consecutive win 69-64 over Bucknell Tuesday after dropping their first five. Senior G Rashad Whack had a game-high 22 points on 66 percent from the field and hit 5 of 7 from the free throw line. Bucknell pulled to within two points on a 19-9 run with 1:49 to play, but then Whack had the final four points to close out the game. Senior G Sam Prescott added 13 points and 7 rebounds on 54 percent shooting. The Mountaineers shot 54 percent from the floor, 29 percent from downtown and hit 12 of 17 from the line.
The Spartans opened up a 23-point home favorite in this one and they haven’t beaten anyone by that much since McNeese State in their season opener, although Mount St. Mary’s only averages a measly 69.9 ppg to Michigan State’s 83.8. Plus the Spartans are due for a rout.
