The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Illinois Fighting Ilini face off on Tuesday in Atlanta in college basketball action.
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have lost their last two games and enter this game at 5-3 for the season. GT has played the 287th ranked schedule in the nation but their losses are all to name teams: St. John’s, Ole Miss, and Dayton. Trae Golden leads the Yellow Jackets averaging 13.5 points per game. Marcus Georges-Hunt is averaging 11.5 points and 5.4 rebounds, Daniel Miller is averaging 10.2 points and 8.9 rebounds, and Robert Carter is averaging 9.2 points and 9.5 rebounds. Georgia Tech is averaging 73.4 points and they are shooting 44.4 percent while defensively they are allowing 67 points and their opponents are shooting 39 percent. Georgia Tech clearly has some work to do when they play the better teams.

The Illinois Fighting Illini are off to a 7-0 start and while they have done all that they need to do thus far they aren’t getting a ton of respect. Illinois made the NCAA Tournament last year and their schedule this year projects to be the second toughest in the nation. Rayvonte Rice is averaging 17.1 points and 6.3 rebounds to lead UI. Joseph Bertrand is averaging 11.7 points and 6.6 rebounds, Tracy Abrams is averaging 11.1 points, and Nnanna Egwu is averaging 9.1 points and 6.6 rebounds. Illinois is averaging 72.3 points and they are shooting 42.5 percent from the floor while defensively they are allowing 57.1 points and their opponents are shooting 36.4 percent. Illinois as Oregon and Missouri among those they play before starting Big Ten play.
Georgia Tech is 5-2 against the spread following a game that they didn’t cover the point spread, 1-5 against the spread in their last six home games, and 0-5 against the spread against the Big Ten. Illinois is 4-0 against the spread against the ACC, 3-1-1 against the spread in their last five games against a team with a winning record, and 1-3-1 against the spread in their last five road games.
The total is set at 128 but the averages suggest a score closer to 140 so my free pick here is the over. I also have a play on the winning side agaisnt the spread that I posted in the Premium Area and on the App.
