The surging Pitt Panthers eye their eighth straight victory when they welcome the Penn State Nittany Lions Tuesday as part of the Big 10/ACC Challenge at the Peterson Events Center in Pittsburgh.
The Panthers are breezing through the early part of their schedule with their closest contest an 84-67 victory over Duquesne Saturday. Previous to that, Pitt smoked Texas Tech and Stanford by 23 and 21 points respectively, the latter coming in the championship game of the Progressive Legends Classic Nov. 26. In their last outing, the Panthers used 15-1 run in the second half to pull away from a pesky Dukes team that took a 44-41 lead to start the second. Junior G Cameron Wright had a game-high 20 points on 9 of 17 shooting and added 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Senior G Lamar Patterson had a strong outing with 18 points, 8 boards and 6 assists, while senior F Talib Zanna had 13 points and 6 rebounds on 62 percent from the field. Through 7 games, Pitt is averaging 81.7 ppg on 48 percent shooting and Patterson leads the team with 17.1 ppg on 50 percent from the floor and 44 percent from distance.

Meanwhile, Penn State comes in with a record of 6-2 and off of a 79-76 loss to Ole Miss in the title game of the Barclays Center Classic Saturday. The game was closely contested for much of the way, but the Rebels broke the game open at the 1:14 mark when Mississippi senior G Marshall Henderson was fouled on a three-point shot attempt and sank all three foul shots to give the Rebels a 78-74 lead and seal the victory. The Nittany Lions shot 47 percent from the floor and 40 percent from beyond the arc for the game and junior G D.J. Newbill scored a game-high 23 points on 10 of 14 shooting. On the season, Penn State is averaging 82.3 ppg on 47 percent shooting and Newbill leads the team with 19.5 ppg on 52 percent from the floor and 45 percent from distance.
Pitt opened up a 15 point favorite here and the Panthers have spanked everyone they’ve faced and seem well on their way to the top 25, but they can’t keep routing everyone. And PSU does have some quality games to its credit, namely the narrow loss to undefeated Ole Miss and wins over St. John’s and Penn. Pitt wins straight up, but the points look like the play.
