The Charlotte 49ers eye their sixth consecutive victory when they host the Davidson Wildcats Wednesday.
The 49ers are rolling thus far this season, impressing in three straight wins in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Tournament over Kansas State, Nebraska and then 14thranked Michigan in the title game. In their last outing, Charlotte routed UNC-Asheville 77-56 behind staunch defense that held the Bulldogs to 34 percent from the field and 26 percent from beyond the arc, while shooting 50 percent from the floor themselves. The 49ers broke the game open early with a 20-6 run, but UNC-Asheville ultimately trimmed the lead to 7 by the break. A 10-0 run in the second half, though, pushed the Charlotte advantage to 74-51 and put them up for good. Sophomore G Shawn Lester had a game-high 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting and hit 2 of 5 from beyond the arc and sophomore G Denzel Ingram score 14 points on 4 of 6 from the field and connected on 4 of 5 from downtown. Through seven games, the 49ers are averaging 77 ppg on 45 percent shooting and Lester leads the team with 15.3 ppg on 51 percent from the floor and 40 percent from distance.
Davidson, meanwhile, come in with a record of 2-5 and losers in 2 of their last 3. The Wildcats won their last game 86-80 over Stetson on 54 percent shooting from the field, 53 percent from beyond the arc and 20 of 25 from the free throw line. Davidson fell behind early in the second half, but cut a seven-point deficit on an 8-2 run that ultimately sealed the game for the Wildcats. Freshman G Jack Gibbs scored a team-high 20 points on 6 of 9 shooting, hit 3 of 3 from beyond the arc and connected on 5 of 6 from the free throw line and junior G Tyler Kalinoski added 14 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds. On the season, Davidson averages 71.9 ppg on 41 percent shooting and senior F De’Mon Brooks leads the team with 16.8 ppg on 48 percent from the floor.
Charlotte is an 8.5 favorite in this one and there’s really no evidence to the contrary. Look for the 49ers in the top 25 soon and look for an easy cover here.
