The Michigan State Spartans and North Carolina Tar Heels face off on Wednesday in East Lansing in college basketball action as part of the Big Ten-ACC Challenge.
The Michigan State Spartans are off to a 7-0 start to the season and they are ranked number one in the nation. As always MSU faces a tough schedule and ducks no one making them battle tested. Gary Harris leads the Spartans averaging 17.7 points per game. Keith Appling is averaging 16.9 points and 5.6 assists, Adreian Payne is averaging 15.9 points and 7.7 rebounds, and Branden Dawson is averaging 10.3 points and 9.7 rebounds. Michigan State is averaging 85.9 points and they are shooting 50.6 percent from the floor while defensively they are allowing 66.9 points and their opponents shoot 38.3 percent. With Michigan State’s schedule it is unlikely they will stay unbeaten or remain number one for the entire season but they should be a factor when March rolls around.

The North Carolina Tar Heels are coming off of their second loss of the year and they have a tough spot to try and bounce back. UNC has already played the 31st ranked schedule in the country and with Kentucky and Texas on tap before they start their ACC schedule the Heels will be battle tested. Marcus Paige is averaging 20.8 points per game as he leads the Tar Heels. James Michael McAdoo is averaging 13.8 points and 6.0 rebounds, Brice Johnson is averaging 13.5 points and 7.2 rebounds, and J.P. Tokoto is averaging 9.5 points and 5.0 rebounds. North Carolina is averaging 76.7 points and they are shooting 48.1 percent while defensively they are allowing 69.5 points and their opponents are shooting 37.4 percent. North Carolina has a signature win over Louisville but the losses to Belmont and UAB knocked them out of the top 25.
Michigan State is 3-7-3 against the spread following a win, 3-1-2 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 2-7-2 against the spread after scoring more than 90 points the previous day. North Carolina is 7-2 against the spread following a game that they didn’t cover the point spread, 50-19-1 against the spread following a loss, and 1-4 against the spread against the Big Ten. North Carolina has covered the spread in the last six meetings of these two.
This is a ton of points to be giving the Heels but I am going to do so in what is just a lean.
