Memorial Gym will be jumping when the Marshall Thundering Herd visit to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Marshall has been difficult to nail down but the season is still young although replacing four starters makes things difficult anyway. We are probably seeing growing pains which might or might not go away over time and I'm looking at growing pains as one of the reasons the Thundering Herd dropped an 88-78 decision to East Tennessee State. The Buccaneers led by 12 after 20 minute and never were challenged behind 53.6% shooting with Marshall hitting at 43%. Throw in 14 turnovers and even numbers other wise and the ETSU markmanship carried the day. Kareem Canty the attack with 19 points followed by Chris Thomas with 17 while Elijah Pittman added 16 points. Shawn Smith and Ryan Taylor combined for 21 points with Smith hauling in 14 rebounds.

Vanderbilt lost their fair share of talent which means the early portion of the schedule might be a feeling out process with the team seeing how they stack up. School is still out on just there this team stands or where they are headed as they tried to pick up a third straight win but came up short in a 70-64 loss at Texas. The Longhorns made a six point lead at the half stand up with 45% accuracy accounting for a few more makes versus the Commodores 38% shooting which was about the biggest difference. Eric McClellan poured in a game high 22 points on 5-14 from the field with Josh Henderson tossing in 12 while Rod Odum chipped in with ten points. Henderson was the only player to shoot at least 50% out of an eight man rotation.
Both teams lost talent from a year ago so perhaps they are more equal then different. Vanderbilt has blow out potential so I'm stepping out on a weak limb...
