The Arizona Wildcats and the UNLV Rebels face off on Saturday in college basketball action.
The Arizona Wildcats are ranked number two in the nation and with Michigan State losing earlier this week they are a likely choice for number one with a win here. Arizona has won all eight of their games this season are coming off of a stretch where they beat Drexel, Duke, and Texas Tech. Nick Johnson leads the Cats averaging 17.1 points per game. Aaron Gordon is averaging 13 points and 9.1 rebounds, Brandon Ashley is averaging 11.9 points and 6.9 rebounds, and Gabe York is averaging 9.4 points. Arizona is averaging 79.6 points per game and they are shooting 51.3 percent from the floor, including 40 percent from beyond the three-point arc, while defensively they are allowing 59.3 points and their opponents are shooting 35.8 percent. Arizona is looking at a tough schedule ahead, but they are going to be a factor this season.

The ULLV Rebels are just 3-3 on the season so far and it looks like a rebuilding year for them. UNLV ended a two game losing streak by beating Tennessee-Martin last time out. Bryce Dejean-Jones is the Rebels leading scorer, averaging 12.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. Roscoe Smith is averaging 12.7 points and 16.2 rebounds, Kevin Olekaibe is averaging 12.5 points, and Khem Birch is averaging 11 points and 10.2 rebounds. UNLV is averaging 71.5 points and they are shooting 42.8 percent from te floor while defensively they are allowing 67.7 points and their opponents are shooting 38.7 percent. This looks to be far and away UNLV’s toughest test the rest of the way this year.
Arizona is 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games, 19-7 against the spread in their last 26 non-conference games, and 1-6 against the spread against the Mountain West. UNLV is 9-23 against the spread following a game that they covered the point spread, 1-3-1 against the spread in their last five games, and 1-4 against the spread against the Pac-12. UNLV is 3-0-1 against the spread in the last four meetings of these two.
This is a big number but the reality is these teams aren’t all that close this season so while it isn’t a Premium type pick, my place is on Arizona.
