The Dayton Flyers travel to Illinois State to play the Redbirds on Saturday night.
The Flyers improved to 7-1 on the year after beating Delaware State 56-46 at home in their first game as a ranked team since 2009. The Flyers needed a 14-2 second-half run to maintain control of the game. Top scores junior G Jordan Sibert (13.6 points per game) and senior F Devin Oliver (12.8) combined for 11 on 3-of-8 shooting as the Flyers shot 45.5% from the field and season lows of 14.3% from three-point range and 51.9% from the free-throw line. The Flyers, however, held Delaware State to 39.5% shooting and committed 7 turnovers. On the year, Oliver also leads the team with 6.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists per contest. Dayton has some big wins over Georgia Tech, Gonzaga to open the Maui Invitational, and a blowout win over California so far this year. The Flyers will hit the road again Saturday night looking to avenge last season’s loss to Illinois State. Dayton is 2-0 on the road this season, after going 2-8 in true road games last year.

Illinois State improved to 4-4 on the year after beating Chicago State 75-56 Wednesday night. The Redbirds shot over 47% from the field and 30% from behind the arc. Illinois State held Chicago State to 30% from the field in the win. Junior G Daishon Knight scored 15 points, while freshman C Reggie Lynch scored 14 points. Junior G Bobby Hunter added 12 points for the Redbirds. On the year, Knight has averaged 16 points in the last six games for the Redbirds, who won the last three over Sonoma State, San Francisco, and Chicago State by an average of 16.7 points. Sophomore G Zach Lofton is averaging 13.3 points per game, while junior F Michael Middlebrooks is averaging a team-high 9.8 rebounds per game. Illinois State lost its top six scorers from last season and is 1-2 at home so far this season. The Redbirds have also lost both times it’s faced a Top 25 non-conference opponent at Redbird arena this year.
Dayton beat Illinois State on the road in 2010 by 21 points, but lost to the Redbirds last year at home by one point. The Flyers will have revenge on their minds in this one and I think they will play well. After not playing so well against Delaware State, I think Dayton will get back on track against Illinois State. The Redbirds are not the same team that beat Dayton last year and I think they will lose at home on Saturday. I’m siding with the Dayton Flyers in this one.
