Fordham looks for its third straight against St. John’s when they meet in the Madison Square Garden Holiday Tournament Saturday.
The Rams are 4-2 and coming off a 79-48 thrashing of Furman Wednesday behind a stellar defensive effort that kept the Paladins to just 34 percent from the field and 0 for 11 from beyond the arc. Fordham jumped out to an early lead right out of the gate, opening with an 18-5 run that Furman never really recovered from. By the halfway point, the Rams had already opened up a 25-point lead, essentially putting the game out of reach. Sophomore G Dominic Early scored a career-high 21 points on 7 of 13 shooting, added 7 rebounds and hit 7 of 7 from the foul line. Sophomore G Mandell Thomas had a season-high 19 points on 63 percent from the floor. Through six games, Fordham is averaging 78.7 ppg on 42 percent shooting and freshman G John Severe leads the team with 23.2 ppg on 40 percent from the floor and 42 percent from downtown.
Meanwhile, St. John’s comes in at 5-2 and off a solid 69-58 win over Georgia Tech last Saturday in the third-place game of the Barclays Center Classic. Junior G D’ Angelo Harrison led the Red Storm with 21 points on 4 of 10 from the field and hit 12 of 13 from the line. St. John’s held the Yellow Jackets to 20 of 54 from the floor and 6 of 16 from beyond the arc, while shooting 44 percent from the field and 33 percent from distance. The Red Storm overcame a ten point deficit early in the second half with a 17-0 run to take a 53-46 lead with just over 6 minutes left. Sophomore F Jakarr Sampson added 16 points on 5 of 7 shooting and hit 6 of 8 from the line. On the season, St. John’s is averaging 70.7 ppg on 43 percent shooting and Harrison leads the team with 19.7 ppg.
The line in this one currently favors St. John’s by 12.5 and by all appearances they have been the stronger side with close losses to Wisconsin and Penn State and a notable win over Georgia Tech. Look or the Red Storm to cover.
