The 16th-ranked Memphis Tigers look for their seventh straight victory when they clash with the Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans Friday night.
Memphis is 6-1 and atoned for its only loss of the season, a 101-80 spanking Nov. 19 at the hands of then #7 Oklahoma State, with a solid 73-68 rematch victory in the title game of the Old Spice Classic Dec. 1. The Cowboys were ranked #5 this time out and preseason Ok State All-American Marcus Smart, who scored an at-will 39 points on 52 percent shooting in the first game, was held to just 12 points on 4 of 13 from the field. The Tigers followed their most impressive win of the season with a 96-76 rout of Northwestern State Dec. 7, in a carryover shooting display of 53 percent from the floor and 42 percent from distance. Sophomore F Shaq Goodwin had a career-high 21 points on 8 of 11 shooting to go along with 6 boards and 5 of 8 from the line. Memphis came in averaging 84.8 ppg and put their high-powered offense on display early, using a 12-0 run to take a 56-29 lead into the break. The Demons managed to trim the lead slightly at times in the second half, but could get no closer than 20 points. Through seven games, the Tigers are averaging 86.4 ppg on 49 percent shooting and senior G Joe Jackson leads the team with 14.7 ppg.

Arkansas-Little Rock, meanwhile, comes in with a record of 3-5 and off a 78-64 loss to Tulsa on Tuesday. The Trojans had a tough day shooting the basketball, hitting just 20 of 55 from the floor and 4 of 16 from beyond the arc. Senior F Will Neighbour recorded his ninth career double-double, leading Arkansas-Little Rock with 15 points and 10 rebounds on 4 of 9 shooting, and 6 of 6 from the free throw line. The Trojans held a 28-26 lead at the half, but conceded a 16-0 run early in the second that they were unable to recover from. Senior G Leroy Isler added 14 points on 4 of 9 from the field and connected on 5 of 5 from the stripe. On the season, the Trojans are averaging 74.1 ppg on 41 percent shooting and Neighbour leads the team with 18.1 ppg on 58 percent from the floor and 50 percent from distance.
The line in this one is currently set at -23 for Memphis and that’s a big number, even when you consider the Tigers’ recent triumphs. But then again, dismantling Austin Peay by 26, Nicholls State by 39 and Sienna by 27 not so long ago does lend itself to a cover here.
