The Michigan State Spartans travel to Oakland to play the Grizzlies on Saturday afternoon.
Michigan State dropped to 7-1 on the season after losing to North Carolina 79-65 over a week ago. Michigan State shot only 35.9% from the field and less than 30% from behind the arc. The Spartans also made 12 of 18 free throws, which is a poor 66.7%. Sophomore G Gary Harris led the Spartans with 17 points, while senior C Adreian Payne scored 16 points and grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds. Senior G Keith Appling poured in 13 points and dished out a team-high 3 assists. North Carolina scored 44 points in the paint, while Michigan State scored only 28 points in the paint, tied for its sixth fewest in game since the start of last season. On the year, Harris averages a team-high 17.6 points per game, while Appling averages 16.4 points and a team-high 5.3 assists per contest. This is an outstanding and experienced Spartan squad, which is efficient on both ends of the floor. Michigan State averages over 20 assists per game, which ranks 1st in the country this year, while also pulling down 40 rebounds per game and scoring over 83 points per game. This will be Michigan State’s first true road game of the season.

The Oakland Grizzlies dropped to 2-8 on the year after losing 81-54 at Indiana on Tuesday night. The Grizzlies lost their first seven games of the year before winning two straight games heading into the game at Indiana. Oakland shot only 32.2% from the field and 20% from long distance. The Grizzlies were out rebounded 52-28 against the best rebounding team in the country so far this year. Reserve Mitch Baenziger had 14 points while leading scorer Travis Bader was held to 11, more than 10 beneath his average. Bader shot 2-of-15 from the field and missed all 10 three-point attempts. Oakland, who is playing their first season in the Horizon League, dropped to 2-31 all-time against teams from the Big Ten. On the year, Bader averages a team-high just over 20 points per game. The Grizzlies rank in the bottom of almost every statistical category both on offense and defense so far this season. Oakland has played a tough schedule to say the least so far and that will continue this weekend. This will be the Grizzlies third home game of the year; Oakland’s only two wins have come at home this year.
Michigan State has won 10 straight games against Oakland, including an 18 point win at Oakland last season. The Grizzlies are catching the Spartans at the worst time ever, following an ugly loss to North Carolina. Coach Izzo will have the players fired up to come out and play efficient basketball on both ends of the floor. Even with Payne and Harris questionable for Michigan State, I think the Spartans win and they win big in this one.
