The 2nd ranked Syracuse Orange visit the garden for a showdown with former Big East foe St. John’s Sunday at noon on Fox Sports 1.
The Orange are perfect on the year this far and made it 9-0 on the young season with a 93-65 win over Binghampton this past week. The Orange rode the hot shooting of CJ Fair early in this one as Cuse built a 24 point first half lead. Fair finished with 19 points on 8-15 shooting and added 4 steals, 3 boards and 3 assists. Syracuse racked up a +9 advantage on the glass and a +15 assist ratio -- with 3 players having 3 or more for the contest. DeJuan Coleman added 13 points and 10 boards. Through 9 contests, only two opponents have managed to keep within single digits of the Orange.
St. John’s has been solid out of the gate this year and currently sit at 6-2 on the season. St. John’s put together arguably their best offensive performance of the year this past week with a 104-58 waxing of Fordham. The Johnnies put up 52 points in each half and saw five players hit double figures with Orlando Sanchez leading the way with 19 off of the bench. D’Angelo Harrison added 13 for the Red Storm who shot it at a 66.1% clip for the game (39-59). St. John’s certainly has a shot to hang with the Cuse if they can keep sharing the ball efficiently -- in their win over the Rams, the Red Storm racked up 29 team assists.
Some trends to consider -- Syracuse is 4-0 against the spread in their last 4 non-conference games and St. John;s is 5-1 against the spread in their last 6 against the ACC.
This game should prove to be one of Syracuse’s tougher tests to date but the Orange are quite familiar with the Garden and have played some of their best ball there. If the Red Storm can get a big shooting night from Harrison and continued scoring presence from Sanchez, a performance similar to the Fordham game could give them a shot. Unfortunately, the #2 team in the nation is too deep and nobody on St. John’s will be able to stop CJ Fair. Syracuse with the narrow cover on the road.
