The St. John’s Red Storm try to rebound from a tough loss when they host the San Francisco Dons Wednesday night.
St. John’s comes in with a record of 6-3 and fresh off a narrow loss to Syracuse Sunday, in which the Red Storm let the game slip away in the final minutes. Junior G D’Angelo Harrison scored a game-high 21 points on 6 of 19 shooting and grabbed 6 rebounds, and freshman G Rysheed Jordan added 13 points, 6 boards and connected on 9 of 9 free throws. Syracuse outshot St. John’s handily from the field 54 percent to 37 percent, but neither team could buy a bucket from beyond the arc, with the Orange hitting 1 of 8 and the Red Storm connecting on 1 of 15. Syracuse opened up a 39-27 lead by the half, but St. John’s clawed their way back and took a 60-58 lead with just over five minutes left. The Orange inched ahead with under two minutes remaining, however, and sealed the victory from the free throw line. Through nine games, St. John’s is averaging 73.6 ppg on 45 percent shooting and Harrison leads the team with 19.1 ppg.
Meanwhile, San Francisco comes in with a record of 6-4 and winners in two of its last three, including a 77-48 rout of Nicholls State Saturday. Senior F Cole Dickerson had a game-high 20 points and 8 rebounds on 7 of 10 shooting, while sophomore G Tim Derksen added 15 points and connected on 2 of 3 from downtown. The Dons shot a strong 57 percent from the field, while holding their opponent to 32 percent and led 30-17 at the half. San Francisco went on a 16-0 run at the 12:52 mark of the second half that pushed the lead to 60-28 and put the game out of reach with just over 7 minutes left. On the season, San Francisco is averaging 84.4 ppg on 49 percent shooting and Dickerson leads the team with 15.4 ppg on 52 percent from the floor and 43 percent from distance.
The line in this matchup currently has St. John’s a 12-point favorite and the Red Storm have certainly had the tougher road with Wisconsin, Georgia Tech and Syracuse among their notables. Of those, they beat Georgia Tech, lost to Wisconsin and played Syracuse to the wire, losing by 5 there. And while San Francisco can score, ranking 22nd in the nation with 84 a game, they got smoked by their only noteworthy opponent in then #17 Oregon and lost to Nevada and Idaho State, who have 6 wins between them. Look for Steve Lavin’s bunch to cover.
