The 6-2 LSU Tigers visit United Spirit Arena for a battle with the 7-3 Texas Tech Red Raiders Saturday at 9PM on ESPNU.
LSU made it two straight on the young season with a 61-54 win over Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday. A red hot Jordan Mickey set the tone early and had a hot hand throughout on his way to 25 points and 9 rebounds on 9-13 shooting. On top of his offense, Mickey added 5 blocks for the game. LSU did not shoot it very well for the game but were strong on the defensive end, limiting UL-Monroe to 35% shooting from the floor and 16% from downtown. LSU ranks 7th in the country in rebounds with 44.4 per game and they moved to 5-1 at home with this win.
Texas Tech has been solid so far this season, winning two and then losing one on through their first 10 contests. The Red Raiders most recent win came over Central Arkansas 79-57 this past weekend. Texas Tech built a 13 point halftime lead behind strong team shooting and contributions off the bench. Reserve Dejan Kravic scored 13 points and pulled down 5 boards in just 9 minutes of play and Jaye Crockett and Jordan Tolbert combined for 20 points to fuel the Red Raiders starting five. While the Red Raiders 7-3 record is solid, they have slipped up against all high-level competition they have faced. Look for LSU to be a stiff test for this team.
Some trends to consider -- LSU is 4-1 against the spread in their last 5 road games and Texas Tech is 6-0 against the spread in their last 6 home contests.
LSU has the edge up front in this game and I expect them to try and get the ball to Johnny O’Bryant early and play the inside out game with Jordan Mickey. Texas Tech will need the continued strong play off their bench if they want to hang in this one. I think the Tigers and Mickey prove to be too much over 40 minutes as they wear down the Red Raiders and steal the road win and the cover.
