The Iona Gaels travel to Dayton to play the Flyers on Thursday night.
Iona dropped to 5-3 on the year after losing to St. Bonaventure 102-89 last week. The Gaels shot 50% from the field and 41.7% from the three-point line. Iona made 21 of 28 free throws, which is an impressive 75% mark. Sean Armand led the team with 30 points; while David Laury added 12 points and a team-high 6 rebounds. The Gaels could not stop St. Bonaventure as they allowed them to shoot 54.5% from the field and 50% from long distance. Iona had won 4 straight games before losing last week and now they will go on a four-game road trip. Armand leads the Gaels with 23.1 points per game, while Laury averages 14.8 points and a team-high 8.4 rebounds per game this season. Iona is averaging just over 80 points per game while shooting an impressive 47.5% from the field. The Gaels also rank 20th in the country in assists, averaging 16.8 per contest. This will be Iona’s 5th road game of the year; the Gaels are 2-2 away from home this season.

The Dayton Flyers improved to 8-2 on the year after beating Central Michigan 84-58 last week. The Flyers shot a blistering 50% in the first half and took a 14-point lead at the break. Dayton held Central Michigan to 39% from the field and an awful 13.6% from behind the arc. Devin Oliver scored 15 points and pulled down 9 rebounds to lead Dayton to the dominating win. Oliver leads the team in scoring, averaging 12.5 points per game this season. Oliver also averages a team-high 6.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists. The Flyers are averaging 75.8 points per game and are shooting over 47% as a team this season. However, Dayton is not a great rebounding team and they do not distribute the ball well sometimes. The Flyers started the year with 5 straight wins before losing to Baylor and have since won three of four games. This will be Dayton’s 6th home game; the Flyers are 5-0 in Dayton Arena so far this year.
The Dayton Flyers are a strong team at home and they have a underrated team this year that could make some noise in March. Iona is a talented team that is looking to rebound from a loss last week. Both teams shoot the ball extremely well and this should be an exciting game. I think Dayton will get the win at home, but I think Iona has enough offensive firepower to keep this one close.
