The 7-4 Marquette Golden Eagles battle the 7-3 New Mexico Lobos from Las Vegas Saturday night at 9pm on ESPNU.
Marquette heads west after a dominant showing this past week over Ball State. The Golden Eagles strong play at home was on full display as they jumped out to an 18 point halftime lead and outscored the Cardinals by 20 more in the second half on their way to the 91-53 win. The Golden Eagles saw seven players reach double figures in this one with Chris Otule’s 14 being the team high. Marquette shot 54% from the field and owned a +11 advantage on the glass for the game. Marquette’s defense fueled their transition attack as their guards assisted in creating 17 steals for the game. The win was the Golden Eagles second straight and moved them to 6-1 at home.

New Mexico is struggling of late and it was most apparent in their recent contest -- an eye opening loss to in-state rival New Mexico State. The Lobos were expected to bounce back after a tough loss to Kansas with a win over their rivals but instead they fell behind by 13 points at the break and were never able to get closer than 6 in the 67-61 loss. Cameron Bairstow led all scorers with 25 for the Lobos but they managed to shoot it just 18-52 from the field and were a dreadful 0-7 from deep. After their tussle with Marquette, the Lobos will need to get in gear with conference season just a week and a half away.
Some trends to consider -- Marquette is 6-1 against the spread in their last 7 contests overall and New Mexico is 2-6 against the spread in their last 8 overall.
While both of these teams have had their ups and downs early this season, Marquette seems to be regaining the form we expect from them while the Lobos are trending downwards quickly. This contest will be a big momentum boost for both squads and I like the Golden Eagles depth and overall defensive intensity they play with to be the difference. Marquette gets a big scoring night from Jamil Wilson and takes down the Lobos for the win and the cover on the neutral floor in Vegas.
