Seton Hall tries to rebound from a dramatic upset when they host Eastern Washington Sunday.
The Pirates are 7-4 and coming off a heartbreaking 83-80 overtime loss to St. Peter’s Dec. 14, in which junior Peacock’s G Desi Washington hit a three-pointer with 3.3 seconds left in overtime after Seton Hall tied it at 80 with a three of their own. Senior G Brian Oliver had a team-high 26 points and 10 rebounds on 8 of 15 shooting. The Pirates were outshot from the field 46 percent to 42 percent and from beyond the arc 52 percent to 32 percent. The two sides were tied 26-26 at the break and traded baskets and advantages early in the second half until St. Peter’s took a 60-57 lead with under five minutes remaining. The Pirates kept the lead at three down the stretch and with the score at 68-65 for St. Peter’s, sophomore G Sterling Gibbs hit a three-point basket with 1.5 seconds left to force overtime. Gibbs finished with 17 points and connected on 9 of 9 from the free throw line, while senior C Gene Teague added 14 points and 11 boards. Through 11 games, Seton Hall is averaging 76.7 ppg on 44 percent shooting and Gibbs leads the team with 16.1 ppg.

Eastern Washington, meanwhile, comes in with a record of 5-4 and on a two-game skid, losing 70-61 to UC Irvine in their last outing Dec. 15. The Eagles struggled to shoot 21 of 63 from the field and 9 of 27 from distance. Sophomore G Tyler Harvey scored a team-high 15 points on 4 of 15 shooting and junior G Parker Kelley added 13 points and connected on 3 of 6 from beyond the arc. Both teams couldn’t buy a bucket in the early going and the score had only reached 9-7 by the midway point of the first half. At the beak, E. Washington led 31-29. UC Irvine found its stroke midway through the second half and used 14-4 run to go up 49-38 at the 10:29 mark. The Eagles quickly countered, but could get no closer than 58-56 before the Anteaters closed the door with a 10-0 run that opened the lead up for good with 34 seconds left. On the season, E. Washington is averaging 77.4 ppg on 46 percent shooting and Harvey leads the team with19.7 ppg.
Seton Hall is currently a 6.5 point favorite in this one and despite the bad loss to St. Peter’s and the one to Fairleigh-Dickinson, this is a talented team. They won’t follow with another bad one here. Look for the Pirates to cover.
