The St. Mary’s Gaels and the South Carolina Gamecocks face off on Saturday in college basketball action from Hawaii.
The St. Mary’s Gaels are off to a 9-0 start to the season and as usual it is well below the radar. St. Mary’s has played the 74th ranked schedule in the nation and have plenty of familiar names on the roster. Brad Waldow leads the Gaels averaging 17.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Stephen Holt is averaging 13.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game, James Walker III is averaging 11.3 points, and Beau Levesque is averaging 11 points and 5.9 rebounds. St. Mary’s is averaging 78.7 points and they are shooting 48.7 percent from the floor while defensively they are allowing 62.6 points and their opponents are shooting 41.9 percent. St. Mary’s opens WCC play on January 2nd against Gonzaga.

The South Carolina Gamecocks are struggling once again this season and they are off to a 2-5 record. The expectations were higher of Frank Martin and the season is already getting away from them. Sindarius Thornwell is averaging 13.6 points per game to lead the Gamecocks. Tyrone Johnson is averaging 12 points, Michael Carrera is averaging 7.2 points and 5.7 rebounds, and Mindaugas Kacinas is averaging 7.1 points and 8.0 rebounds. South Carolina is averaging 67.9 points and they are shooting 40.3 percent from the floor while defensively they are allowing 70.3 points and their opponents are shooting 40.8 percent. This looks like it will be a long year for the Gamecocks.
St. Mary’s is 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games, 5-1 against the spread following a win, and 5-11 against the spread in their last 16 games against a team with a winning percentage below .400. South Carolina is 4-1 against the spread in their last five neutral site games, 2-9 against the spread in their last 11 games overall, and 1-6 against the spread following a loss.
South Carolina is just awful and even with this number St. Mary’s is being under rated.
