The UC Riverside Highlanders host the Northern Illinois Huskies in Sunday action.
If we go back in time to last season we had a Northern Illinois squad that really had issues scoring the basketball. Points are still a precious commodity but the Huskies have at least scored enough to do a little bit of winning. NIU improved to 4-5 after knocking off Loyola-Chicago 55-49 as they took a 14 point lead after 20 minutes and held on for dear life. Both teams finished with around 36% marksmanship with the Huskies making a few more free throws and a basket or so. Travon Baker led the NIU offense with 14 points with Darrell Bowie and Aaron Armstead netting 13 and 12 points while Dontel Highsmith chipped in with ten.

There have been a few times where UC Riverside has looked good offensively but those times didn't last. This team needs to control the pace and shorten the game to be successful which essentially means low scoring and close contests. That method worked out to perfection in a 57-56 decision over Illinois-Chicago in a boxscore that was almost identical. The Highlanders sank shots at 41.8% with the Flames hitting at 39% which turned out to be roughly one more basket. UC Riverside received 15 points and eight boards from Chris Patton followed by Taylor Johns with 12 points and ten rebounds followed by Nick Grunninger with an eleven point, five pull performance.
Both teams have issues at the offensive end so this game might be fortunate to get past 60. If points are at a premium then it seems like taking them would be the wise choice...
