The Florida International Golden Panthers visit our Nation’s Capital Saturday at noon to face the Georgetown Hoyas on Fox Sports 1.
Florida International is off to a good start on the young season as they currently are 8-5, but have struggled against the high level competition they have faced. Their most recent contest got out of hand quickly as they fell 85-56 to the defending national champion Louisville Cardinals. Louisville’s depth and hot shooting were the key factors in this rout as the Golden Panthers were unable to ever match their ability to score in spurts. After building a 13 point halftime lead, the Cardinals opened the second half on a run that pretty much sealed the game. Tymell Murphy led FIU with 16 points and Raheem Buckles added 13 and 9 for a thin FIU team that should improve their depth dramatically over the next few years. The Golden Panthers committed 20 turnovers and tallied just 6 total assists for the game.

Georgetown has had one week to stew over their loss at Kansas. The Hoyas kept things interesting for about 15 minutes before a late first half Kansas run helped fuel their second half momentum and turn the game into a romp. The Hoyas hit just 4 three pointers all game and were crushed on the glass (49-39). Georgetown’s bench was woeful outside of reserve Aaron Bowen’s 9 points. The rest of the Hoya bench combined for just 6 points -- a recipe for disaster on the road at Kansas. Markel Starks led the Hoyas with 19 points, but managed just 2 assists. The Hoyas will need to get better distribution from Starks once Big East play kicks off as their are no other suitable point guards on this roster capable of facilitating. The loss moves the Hoyas to 7-3.
Some trends to consider -- FIU is 9-4 against the spread in their last 13 non-conference games and Georgetown is 5-1 against the spread in their last 6 versus Conference USA.
The Hoyas have had a week to prep for the Golden Panthers and they should have plenty to go off of from the way Louisville dismantled their defense. The Hoyas are far from as strong offensively as Louisville, but have enough weapons to wear down the non-existent depth of the Golden Panthers. I like Georgetown to rebound in this one behind a big game from Starks and big man Josh Smith to get the cover and win at home.
