The 4-8 Davidson Wildcats visit Charles Koch arena Sunday for a showdown with the 10th ranked Wichita State Shockers at 3PM.
Davidson has had one of their rougher starts in the past few years this season with quite a few narrow losses against solid competition. The Wildcats can score it and are led by guard Brian Sullivan. In their last game, a 97-85 loss in OT at UNC, Sullivan led all scorers with 33 points on 7-14 shooting from deep. De’Mon Brooks added 13 and Jordan Barham had 17 off the bench. The Wildcats continue to find a consistent answer on the glass as they were once again outrebounded, this time 42-35. With the game back and forth late, the Wildcats also failed to capitalize at the line -- they finished the contest just 14-24 (58.3%). The loss marks Davidson’s 3rd straight.

The Shockers moved to 12-0 on the season this past week as they made easy work of North Carolina Central 77-66. The Shockers broke this one open with a run about half way through the first half that resulted in a 16 point advantage at the break. Four of Wichita State’s veteran starting five reached double figures with Darius Carter’s 19 leading the way. Cleanthony Early added 16 and 10 and Fred VanVleet had 8 assists to lead the Shockers offensive attack. The Shockers ripped down a +15 edge on the glass and forced NCCU into 16 turnovers for the game as well -- igniting their transition attack.
Some trends to consider -- Davidson is 3-7 in their last 10 non-conference games and Wichita State is 3-1-1 against the spread in their last 5 at home.
Davidson and their deep shooting attack is pretty much all the Shockers have to worry in this one. Ultimately, I like the Shockers defense and physical play to be the difference in this one. I expect Sullivan to be tough to stop but the Shocker faithful and their home court advantage should fuel a 2nd half pull away as Wichita State moves to 13-0 with the cover at home.
