The 9-3 St. Mary’s Gaels and the 9-2 Pacific Tigers kick off their WCC seasons with a showdown at the Spanos Center Monday night at 11PM.
St Mary’s lost their 3rd contest of the season in consolation play from Hawaii this past week, falling to George Mason 65-63. The Gaels let a lead they held for over 37 minutes slip away late and were unable to convert key baskets down the stretch, allowing the Patriots to steal the win. Stephen Holt and James Walker III combined for 28 points and 7 boards for the Gaels and Beau Levesque added 7 points 5 boards and 4 assists. The Gaels had one less assists than they did turnovers and even more troubling, they finished 58.3% from the line and missed multiple attempts that could have kept George Mason at bay late in the game. The loss marked the Gaels third heartbreaker in a row after starting the season 9-0.
The Pacific Tigers are 9-2 and bounced back less than 24 hours after a dismal shooting night loss to Princeton to upend Bradley 71-55 in vegas two weekends ago. The Tigers got the victory with a true team effort as 13 players saw action and only two failed to get in the scorebook. Tony Gill and Aaron Short scored 11 and 10 respectively and T.J. Wallace added a team high 14 points off the bench for Pacific. The Tigers hit 9 threes and held a solid shooting Bradley team to just 6 buckets from deep. The Tigers will hope to keep their perfect home record in place as they return home to open conference play.
Some trends to consider -- St. Mary’s is 1-4 against the spread in their last 5 Monday games and Pacific is 6-1-1 against the spread in their last 8 home games.
These two squads are very evenly matched and should both be vying for a top 4 finish in WCC play this year. This contest comes down to home court advantage -- the Tigers are perfect at home and the Gaels are coming off a crushing road trip where they failed to win a contest. St. Mary’s keeps this one close throughout before the Tigers pull away late for the cover at home and a 1-0 mark in early conference season play.
