The DePaul Blue Demons kick off conference play with a familiar road trip to D.C. to face the Georgetown Hoyas from Verizon Center at 5PM on Fox Sports One.
DePaul bounced back from an in-state loss to Illinois State with a win over a fellow Illinois school at Northwestern 57-56. The Blue Demons seemingly long streak of bad luck finally gave way as guard Billy Garrett Jr.’s basket as time wound down secured them the narrow road win. Garrett Jr. finished with 9 points and 4 assists. Sandi Marcius and Cleveland Melvin combined for 23 points and 11 rebounds and Charles McKinney added 8 off the bench. DePaul won the rebounding battle 46-40 and forced the Northwestern backcourt into 10 turnovers for the game. DePaul hopes this road test and win fuels their momentum into conference play as two tough road contests loom to kick off the new year.

Georgetown rebounded from a rout loss at Kansas to get back on track against Florida International 92-57. The Hoyas were led by the play of their big three -- Nate Lubick, D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Markel Starks all scored 15 points and Smith-Rivera added 6 assists as Georgetown never exploded to a 50-14 lead at the break and coasted for the win. Georgetown opened the game on a 30-4 run and forced the Florida International backcourt into 18 turnovers for the game. Georgetown shot it 60% from the field and finished 73% from the line as well in the dominant win.
Some trends to consider -- DePaul is 2-5 against the spread in their last 7 road games and Georgetown is 10-4 against the spread in their last 14 at home.
Georgetown is the superior team here but the Hoyas showing against FIU was very much an outlier performance as the Hoyas have to rely on unusually hot shooting nights to win games by 20+ points. I don’t expect as solid of a shooting outing for the Hoyas in this one and DePaul’s large guards should provide problems for the shorter Hoya backcourt. I like the Hoyas to get the win late in this one with the Blue Demons grabbing the road cover.
