The Utah State Aggies open up conference play at the Air Force Falcons on New Year's Day.
Utah State looks like a challenger in the Mountain West but we won't know if that comes to be until the meat of the league schedule begins. The Aggies have won five in a row following an 84-53 rout of San Diego Christian. This was a mismatch from the opening tip with USU sinking half their looks while holding the Hawks to less then 35% which was game over because it meant 13 more field goals. Preston Medlin led the scoring spree with 17 points with Kyle Davis adding 15 points and 15 rebounds followed by Jordan Stone and Spencer Butterfield tossing in 12 and eleven points with Butterfield grabbing 13 boards.

It doesn't appear that Air Force is as strong as they were a year ago as they are just keeping their heads above water. The Falcons were building some momentum with three consecutive victories before the good times ended in an 80-74 loss to UC Davis. The Aggied held a 51%-47% shooting edge with AFA hanging tough with nne more attempts but losing it with Davis holding a 21-7 edge at the charity stripe. The Air Force offense was a two man show with Justin Hammonds and Tre Coggins scoring 20 points each with Hammonds grabbing seven boards while Coggins handed out seven assists. Max Yon followed with 13 points while Marek Olesinski and Kamryn Williams combined for 15.
Utah State has faired better against tougher competition but laying points on the road makes my skin crawl but right or wrong that's how I feel...
