The St. John’s Red Storm visit the Verizon Center for a Big East showdown with the Georgetown Hoyas at 1PM on Fox Sports 1.
St. John’s looks to get their first conference win as they sit at 9-4 on the season and are fresh off a conference opener loss to Xavier 70-60. The Red Storm blew a 2 point halftime lead quickly in the second half as the Musketeers opened up offensively and ran away with the comfortable win at home. D’Angelo Harrison was his usual productive self, totaling 21 points on 7-20 shooting. The Red Storm shot the ball 30% as a whole but were able to hang in the game with 50% shooting from deep (7-14). St. John’s was efficient with the ball as well -- turning it over just 7 times while racking up 12 team assists.
Georgetown enters this contest after defeating DePaul in their Big East opener 61-54. The Hoyas are now 9-3 and against DePaul, they managed to lead throughout the entire contest and hold on despite a decent showing from the Blue Demons on the road. The Hoya backcourt was easily the difference in this one as they racked up 33 points and 8 boards with D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera’s 21 leading the way. The Hoyas continue to struggle at the line -- an area where they will need to improve as the conference season and level of competition improves. In this one, Georgetown finished just 55.6% from the field.
These two long time rivals always play close contests and I expect Saturday afternoon to be no different. Look for the Hoyas to have the defensive advantage in the backcourt and I like Smith-Rivera to get the better of D’Angelo Harrison in a duel between two of the best scorers in the Big East conference. Georgetown pulls away late for the cover at home.
