The Portland Pilots look for their seconcd conference win versus the Saint Mary's Gaels.
If this is the same Saint Mary's club we have come to know over the past few years they need to get the ship righted with losses in three of four. The defense has struggled in this span although the offense also had issues in a 73-51 defeat at Gonzaga. The Gaels were done from the opening tip with a 14 point deficit at the break with the Zags connecting at 49% and SMC mustering 32% which was decisive. Beau Levesque was the only double digit scorer with 12 points while Stephen Holt and Jordan Giusti combining for 16 points.
Portland has looked strong thus far but the real test will be how this team performs in the West Coast. After suffering back to back defeats to open the conference slate the Pilots knocked off Pacific 72-64 as the offense continued to score and received a helping hand from the defensive end of the floor. Portland only hit on 43% from the field but held the Tigers to only 33% and won it by turning 22 Pacific personals in to a 21-8 advantage. Thomas van der Mars led the attack with 18 points and 13 rebounds with Ryan Nicholas checking in with 17 points and 12 boards. Kevin Bailey tossed in 15 points and snared five pulls followed by Bryce Pressley with a 12 point, ten rebound performance.
Saint Mary's has usually waffled Portland so have the Pilots improved enough to compete here? The line says yes but seeing is believing because the Gaels are due to crush someone...
