The Vanderbilt Commodores and the Northeastern Huskies face off on Saturday in a college basketball matchup.
The Vanderbilt Commodores appear to be in a rebuilding mode as they take care of business against the lesser teams but struggle against the better teams. Vandy is 5-1 at home this season but they are 0-4 against teams with a RPI better than 100. Eric McClellan leads the Commodores averaging 14.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Rod Odom is averaging 12.6 points and 5.6 rebounds, Kyle Fuller is averaging 9.5 points, and Damian Jones is averaging 9.7 points. Vanderbilt is averaging 70.1 points and they are shooting 45.3 percent while defensively they are allowing 68 points and their opponents are shooting 41.1 percent. Vanderbilt opens SEC play on January 7th at Alabama.

The Northeastern Huskies showed promise earlier this season when they beat Georgetown in an early season tournament in Puerto Rico but since then it has been all downhill. Northeastern is 0-4 on the road this season and just 3-10 overall and while most of their losses have been close games of five or less points they have been on the wrong end of things. Scott Eatherton leads the Huskies averaging 17.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. David Walker is averaging 11.5 points, Reggie Spencer is averaging 9.8 points and 7.2 rebounds, and Demetrius Pollard is averaging 7.8 points. Northeastern is averaging 66.7 points and they are shooting 44.6 percent from the floor while defensively they are allowing 69.3 points and their opponents are shooting 46.2 percent. Northeastern has played the 26th toughest schedule in the country and that has plenty to do with their lack of success.
Vanderbilt is 6-2 against the spread following a los, 6-2 against the spread against a team with a losing record, and 4-0 against the spread against the CAA. Northeastern is 16-6 against the spread following a game that they didn’t cover the point spread, 1-5 against the spread in their last six games, and 1-5 against the spread in their last six non-conference games.
Northeastern hasn’t been winning games but they keep it close and I see it being the same thing here.
