The Alabama Crimson Tide and the Vanderbilt Commodores face off on Tuesday in Tuscaloosa as they begin their SEC college basketball schedules.
The Alabama Crimson Tide are a game under .500 but are coming off of a win as they head into SEC hoops play. Alabama is 6-2 at home this season and they have played the ninth toughest schedule in the country. Trevore Releford leads the Crimson Tide averaging 18.5 points per game. Retin Obashan is averaging 12.8 points, Levi Randolph is averaging 9.9 points, and Nick Jacobs is averaging 9.6 points. As a team Alabama is averaging 72.6 points and they are shooting 46.3 percent while defensively they are allowing 66.7 points and their opponents are shooting 41.6 percent. Alabama has two losses to teams in the top 25 and four losses to teams with a RPI better than 50.

The Vanderbilt Commodores are 8-4 on the season but they have yet to win a road game. Vandy has played the 112nd ranked schedule in the country and has three of their losses coming to teams with a RPI better than 50. Eric McClellan is averaging 14.2 points and 4.4 rebounds to lead the Commodores. Rod Odom is averaging 13.3 points and 5.8 rebounds, Damian Jones is averaging 10.2 points, and Kyle Fuller is averaging 9.6 points. Vanderbilt is averaging 70.8 points and they are shooting 46.6 percent while defensively they are allowing 66.4 points and their opponents are shooting 40.3 percent. Vandy has won four of their last five games.
Alabama is 5-1 against the spread in their last six SEC games, 1-5 against the spread in their last six games, and 5-11 against the spread against a team with a losing record. Vanderbilt is 7-3 against the spread against the SEC, 7-2 against the spread against a team with a losing record, and 1-4 against the spread following a game that they covered the point spread. The road team has covered the spread in the last four meetings of these two.
While Bama’s losses have come against the better teams this one looks to be closer than the number and my play here is Vandy with the points.
