The Saint Mary's Gaels do battle with the San Francisco Dons in West Coast action Sarurday.
I know this is too premature for San Francisco to begin celebrating but at 4-1 in the WCC they are tied at the top with Gonzaga. Of course staying there is the goal and with their offensive ability that's a possibility if their defense lends a hand. The Dons defeated Pacific 81-72 in overtime in a game they trailed throughout before rallying to force the extra session. The Tigers were held to 31.7% from the floor but won the free throw battle 30-19 to off set nine more Dons field goals. Avry Holmes paced the SF attack with 18 points and eight assists with Matt Glover next in line with 16 points and nine boards while Cole Dickerson netted 14 points and grabbed eight pulls.
Something doesn't seem to be quite right with Saint Mary's and it all began with three consecutive defeats at the Diamond Head Classic. The Gaels fell to 2-2 in the West Coast following a 57-55 loss to visiting Santa Clara as a 13 point favorite. A nine point lead at the half fell by the wayside as 37.5% from the floor didn't stand up to the Broncos 47% which was decisive. Brad Waldow led the Gaels scoring with 17 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks while the duo of Beau Levesque and James Walker III netted 12 points apiece with Levesque snagging five boards. The top four of the starting lineup accounted for all but seven points overall.
I still have the feeling Saint Mary's rights the ship and begins to play like the dominating team of the past several years. San Francisco might be where it starts because of their defense but until I see it happen I'll take all the points...
