Storyline: West Virginia tries to halt a two-game slide against Kansas State Saturday at Fred Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan.

The Breakdown: The Mountaineers have lost two straight after opening conference play with consecutive wins and followed a near upset of then #11 Oklahoma State Jan. 11 with an 80-69 stinker of a loss to Texas, in which the Mountaineers shot just 37 percent from the field and couldn’t buy a bucket from outside the arc, hitting just 4 of 25. WVU allowed the Longhorns to connect on 29 of 55 from the floor and 4 of 9 from distance and also lost the rebound battle big 49-30, while committing a whopping 18 turnovers. Through 17 games, the Mountaineers are averaging 79.9 ppg on 45 percent shooting and sophomore G Enron Harris and junior G Juwan Staten lead the team with 17.4 ppg.

Meanwhile, Kansas State looks to have put an end to Oklahoma’s short stay in the top 25 with its 72-66 home victory over the Sooners Tuesday. The Wildcats held OU to a season-low 33 percent from the field and 7 of 23 from downtown, while themselves hitting 21 of 50 from the floor and 11 of 21 from outside the arc. K-State also outrebounded the Sooners 42-38. On the season, the Wildcats are averaging 67.5 ppg on 42 percent shooting and freshman G Marcus Foster leads the team with 13.9 ppg followed by junior F Thomas Gipson at 11.3 ppg.

Rick’s Pick: The line in this matchup is currently set at -4 for K-State and WVU is slumping, but they’re bigger and they have more scorers, evidenced by their averaging about 12 points more a game. Straight up this game looks like a tossup. K-State took out Ok State, while WVU lost to the Cowboys by 1 point. Their only other common opponent is TCU and the Wildcats beat them by 12, while the Mountaineers edged them by 5. Not much of a barometer there. The Mountaineers get the lean, though.
