The 20th ranked Creighton Bluejays visit the Dunkin Donuts Center for a showdown with the Providence Friars Saturday at 8PM on Fox Sports 1.
Creighton kept their unbeaten conference streak alive this past week with a dominant offensive performance in rout over visiting Butler 88-60. Doug McDermott scored most of his game high 28 points in the first half as the Bluejays played nearly flawless basketball on their way to a 53-24 halftime lead. Creighton was right on their NCAA-leading assists mark with 19 team assists on the game and Austin Chapman added 10 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Creighton was 11-14 at the line and shot it 55.6% from the floor. The Bluejays continued quality play has separated them from the pack and proven them to be legit challengers to Villanova for the conference title.
The Friars moved to .500 in the conference with a thrilling, two OT, 84-83 win over St. John’s. The win was a much needed one for the Friars, who lost a pair of thrilling OT contests earlier this season. Bryce Cotton was the star of the game scoring 21 points and adding 9 rebounds and 8 assists. In addition to his offense, Cotton tied up St. John’s guard Max Hooper to regain possession late in the 2nd OT and then hit the game winning shot a short time later. Tyler Harris added 18 and 4 and Kadeem Batts and LaDontae Henton combined for 34 points and 18 boards as well for the Friars. Providence now finds themselves squarely in the middle of the pack after rough start to conference play.
Providence will be riding high after their 2OT win, but with just a two day turnaround, I expect the Friars to come out flat and ultimately the Bluejays to wear down Providence with their heady play and efficient offense. Look for Doug McDermott to add 20+ once again as Creighton keeps perfect in conference play with the road cover in Rhode Island.
