The Arkansas State Red Wolves travel to Western Kentucky for Sun Belt hoops action Saturday night at 8PM on ESPN3.
Arkansas State just missed their opportunity to move to 4-1 in the conference this past week as they fell to conference foe Georgia State 73-72. The Red Wolves fought back late in the contest before their comeback attempt on the road fell just short. The Red Wolves were paced by the solid play of guard Kirk Van Slyke -- Van Slyke hit 9-16 from the field and scored a team high 22 points and 10 rebounds. Kendrick Washington added 10 and 9 in the paint and the Red Wolves owned the glass, 41-26. Despite their advantages in field goal percentage, rebounding and team assists, the Red Wolves fell just shy of moving into a tie for first in the conference and will need to get back on track at Western Kentucky.

The Hilltoppers are .500 in conference and their young squad has been up and down so far this season. The Hilltoppers are in the midst of a two game losing streak after falling to Arkansas Little-Rock 87-83 in OT. Western Kentucky and the Arkansas Little-Rock traded buckets for most of the night before a pair of late baskets by the Trojans allowed them to sneak away with the win. Western Kentucky was led in scoring by Aleksej Rostov’s 20 and Chris Harrison-Docks’ 14 points. Western Kentucky turned the ball over 23 times and were undone by the Trojans solid free throw shooting late in the game (81.8%).
With a share of third place on the line and the opportunity to keep pace with Georgia State up for grabs, I expect this game to be a close one and the Hilltoppers to bounce back at home with the win. The Hilltoppers bench and the play of Rostov in the post will be the difference here in the Hilltopper cover.
