Storyline: Southern Illinois and Drake both look to climb out of the bottom of the MVC when they square off at SIU Arena Wednesday.
The Breakdown: Southern Illinois is 2-4 in conference and coming off a 66-60 loss to Bradley on Friday that negated an outstanding shooting day from the field. The Salukis connected on 23 of 41, but allowed the Braves to shoot 49 percent from the floor and 54 percent from beyond the arc, while committing 14 turnovers. Senior G Desmar Jackson had a game high 17 points on 8 of 12 shooting and sophomore G Anthony Beane added 15 points on 3 of 4 from downtown. Southern Illinois has now dropped three consecutive to Bradley. Through 19 games, the Salukis are averaging 67.5 ppg on 46 percent shooting and Jackson leads the team in scoring with 20.4 ppg on 49 percent shooting, followed by sophomore F Jalen Pendleton at 11.3 ppg on 50 percent from the field.

Drake, meanwhile, sits in last place in the Missouri Valley Conference with a league record of 1-5. The Bulldogs have lost their last five after winning their conference opener, including a 77-63 loss to Illinois State Saturday. Drake was outshot handily from the floor 48 percent to 34 percent and from distance 45-36. Both sides shot well from the free throw line with the Bulldogs connecting on 24 of 30 and the Red Birds hitting 16 of 19. Drake was also outrebounded 38-23 and committed 16 turnovers. Senior G Richard Carter had a game-high 24 points and connected 9 of 10 from the line, while senior F Aaron Hawley added 14 points and 4 rebounds. On the season, Drake is averaging 72.6 ppg on 45 percent shooting and Carter leads the team with 18.3 ppg.
Rick’s Pick: The line in this matchup is currently set at -1 for S. Ilinois and, just as the line would indicate, this looks to be a tossup. The Salukis share a couple losses with Drake, but have also beaten a couple teams the Bulldogs have lost to and vice-versa, if that makes any sense. S. Illinois gets the lean by virtue of playing at home.
