The Western Michigan Broncos visit the Kent State Flashes in a battle to go above .500 in MAC play Thursday night at 7PM.
Western Michigan fell to .500 in league play this past weekend as they lost to Bowling Green 69-64. The Broncos have now lost two in a row after starting the conference season 2-0. Against Bowling Green, the Broncos got 21 and 5 boards from guard David Brown and 18 and 8 from big man Shayne Whittington. The Broncos best ball was played in the first half as they built a 12 point halftime lead before the Falcons erased it quickly and pulled away late. Point guard play continues to be an issue for the Broncos as they only average 11 assists per game (293rd nationally) and forward Connor Tava is the team leader in assists with just over 2 per game.
Kent State also sits at 2-2 in league play and saw a two game win streak come to an end this past week @ Buffalo 81-70. The Golden Flashes saw their 2 point halftime lead quickly evaporate as the Bulls abused the Golden Flashes up front on their way to a dominant second half run that put the game out of reach. Kent State got decent production from 10 rotation players but continue to struggle with a consistent contributor who can be relied on night in and night out. On this night, guard Deveraux Manley led the way with 17 points and 4 boards and Kris Brewer was the only other Kent State player to score in double figures with 11. The Golden Flashes will continue to need to excel defensively as they try to stay above water in MAC play.
There is quite a bit of parity in the MAC this year and the home team seems to be a safe pick game in and game out. Because of that, I am gonna go with the Flashes to bounce back and keep the Broncos losing streak alive. Manley makes it back to back contests with 15+ points as Kent State gets the win and the cover at home.
