The Seton Hall Pirates make the short trip to Carnesecca Arena for a showdown with the St. John’s Red Storm Thursday night at 7PM on CBS Sports Network.
Seton Hall enters this contest sitting at 2-3 in conference play and coming off a big 10 points road win at Georgetown this past weekend. The Pirates bounced back well after a heartbreaking loss at Marquette and continue to show that they are solid away from home. Seton Hall used a huge second half rally to erase a double digit deficit in this one and get the comfy win. Fuquan Edwin’s shooting led to 24 points and 6 boards and the Pirates also got steady point guard play from Sterling Gibbs who added 11 points and 9 assists. Edwin fueled a late 15-3 run that stole the game for Seton Hall and the Pirates were strong at the line down the stretch to ice the game. The win marked the first win for the Pirates in DC in 14 years.
St. John’s had to go out of conference last weekend to get their first win in quite some time as the Red Storm used their size and athleticism to defeat Dartmouth 69-55. The Red Storm are now 10-8 overall but remain winless in Big East play as they hit the stretch run for their conference slate. Against Dartmouth, the Red Storm were lethargic on offense but had enough depth and size to wear down the Big Green for the win. Orlando Sanchez had 8 points and 10 rebounds and Jakarr Sampson added 13 up front for St. John’s. The Red Storm had 41 team rebounds for the game and also forced 11 blocks down low -- many of which led to heady passes and transition scoring by Phil Greene IV -- who led all scorers with 16 points.
These two rivals are always good for a close game. Fortunately for Seton Hall, they have performed well in close games and as Gene Teague gets more and more back in game shape, I like the Pirates to hang around in the conference race. Look for Seton Hall to get the best of the backcourt battle behind Edwin and Gibbs play and for St. John’s lack of offensive firepower to doom them down the stretch as Seton Hall goes home with the road cover and win.
