The St. John’s Red Storm head to Hinkle Fieldhouse to battle the Butler Bulldogs as both teams try to crawl out of the conference cellar.

St. John’s finally got in the conference win column this past week with a narrow, 77-76 win over rival Seton Hall at home. Sir’Dominic Pointer knocked the ball out of Seton Hall guard Fuquan Edwin’s hand as the Pirates attempted to win the game at the buzzer.  The win was much needed and the 2nd in a row for the Johnnies who stepped out of conference last weekend to beat Dartmouth.  D’Angelo Harrison led the way with 16 points and 6 rebounds and both Jakarr Sampson and Orlando Sanchez added 16 up front for the Red Storm as well.  St. John’s racked up 17 team assists and played their best ball of the season in the half court set in the win.

Mark L. Baer-USA TODAY Sports

Butler fell to 1-6 in conference play and were unable to capitalize on their first conference win of the season as they fell to red hot Providence 65-56.  Butler struggled on offense and only got contributions from Kyhle Marshall and Kellen Dunham.  Dunham and Marshall combined for 32 points but no other players reached double figures and the Bulldogs shot the ball just 4-12 from deep.  Providence destroyed the Bulldogs on the glass and the Bulldogs allowed Friars forward Kadeem Batts to rack up 17 rebounds and 14 points in the paint against their frail front court.

Both of these teams have struggled mightily this season but the Bulldogs have been more competitive than St. John’s and are usually solid at home, despite their narrow losses early this season.  I like the Red Storm to take the early lead in this one before Kellen Dunham and Khyle Marshall rally the Bulldogs for win number two in conference play and the 7-10 point win.
