The DePaul Blue Demons visit the Seton Hall Pirates in Big East Conference action Saturday.
DePaul enters this one fresh off a home loss to a solid Xavier team - 84-74. DePaul was doomed by the no show of their supporting cast. Cleveland Melvin scored 25 points to lead DePaul and Billy Garrett added 18 but the Blue Demons got minimal contributions from the rest of their roster. Nine DePaul reserves saw action and the Blue Demons only had 13 points off their bench. The Blue Demons were just under 27% from deep and were a dismal 22-38 at the line -- leaving tons of points on the floor.
Seton Hall returns home after suffering a heartbreaking loss to lowly St. John’s 77-76. The Pirates were the Red Storm’s first win of the season and the game was lost when Fuquan Edwin was stripped while trying to pull up for a game winning jumper. Edwin finished with 12 and Sterling Gibbs finished with 20, 6 and 4 for the Pirates who fell just short. St. John’s had their way up front as the Red Storm’s bigs both tallied 16 a piece. The loss drops Seton Hall to 2-4 in Big East play and an unspectacular 11-8 overall. The Pirates now rank 224th in the nation on total rebounds with 34 per game.
These two teams have both had their moments this year and the Pirates were about 5 seconds away from being .500 in conference. I like the Pirates guard play to be the difference in this one, along with their home court as they Pirates get to 3-4 with the 10 point win at home and the cover.
