A Thursday night Conference USA matchup between Old Dominion and UAB has the potential to be a fairly decent basketball game. The Monarchs have won five of their last six and hold a 4-1 conference record, while the Blazers have split their last four games and are 2-3 in conference play.
Old Dominion is a slow paced offensive team that isn’t going to score a ton of points, but it has improved its field goal percentage to above 46 percent in the last five games. Guys are getting open looks and it’s helped string together some wins. Defensively hasn’t been too shabby either, holding opponents to 61 points in its last five games.

UAB is the opposite and rather score in the 70s. It’s one of the higher scoring teams in the country at nearly 76 points per game and usually loses when it doesn’t crack the 70-point margin. Defensively is where the Blazers could improve, as teams are shooting above 38 percent from downtown against them in the last five contests.
Even with home court advantage at the Bartow Arena, I have to go with the Monarchs in this matchup. It’s the better team at the moment and their slow paced style of play could frustrate the Blazers in a big way.
Old Dominion is 6-1 against the spread in its last seven road games and is also 10-7 against the spread this season. UAB is 7-8 against the spread overall and only 2-5 against the number on its home floor.
Give me the hotter team and the points.
