The Akron Zips tangle with the Kent State Golden Flashes in Saturday MAC action.
Akron looks like a team to beat once again in the MAC with a 6-1 mark to kick off the conference slate. Not all have been impressive double figure routs until Wednesday night when Ball State probably wished they were somewhere else. The Cardinals found themselves on the wrong end of a 73-46 score where the deficit was 16 heading to the locker room. The Zips put together a 40 minute performance where 48% shooting including 10-24 from distance was far better then Ball State's 35%. Nick Harwell and Demetrius Treadwell paced four DD scorers with 15 points each with Kwan Cheatham Jr. and Reggie McAdams tossing in 14 and 11 points.
Kent State is in struggle mode at the moment with four consecutive defeats and an overall conference mark of 2-5. Perhaps it's not as simple as this but the points haven't been flowing and the defense has been getting scored on. The Golden Flashes appeared to be on their way to a win over Northern Illinois with an eight point lead going in to the second half before the offense mustered just 21 points over the final 20 minutes. In an even boxscore both teams sank shots in the 35% range and combined for 37 turnovers. Darren Goodson was the only Kent player to reach double figures in scoring with ten points with Derek Jackson and Mark Henniger combining for 15.
These teams appear to be heading in opposite directions although I believe Kent State is capable of beating anybody in the MAC. So is Akron but neither makes me want to bet the house on them...
