The Marquette Golden Eagles visit the St. John’s Red Storm Saturday at 12:30PM on Fox Sports One.
Marquette’s up and down season had a high note this past week as they defeated the red hot Providence Friars at home by a score of 61-50. While the Golden Eagles have struggled mightily on offense all season long, their defense can never be called into question and they did a great job of shutting down a Providence team that was scoring nearly 80 points per game over the past few weeks during their winning streak. The Golden Eagles had ten players get in the scoring column and were led by DeVante Gardner’s 14 off the bench. Jamil Wilson added 11 and Derrick Wilson led all rebounders with 8 on the game.
St. John’s sits at 12-9 just like Marquette but the Red Storm have long fallen out of the conference race as they sit at 2-6 on the season currently. Most recently, the Red Storm saw a valiant effort on the road fall just short as they fell to #20 Creighton 63-60. St. John’s executed their game plan to perfection as the Red Storm keyed in on the rest of the Bluejays and were content letting Doug McDermott get his points. Unfortunately for St. John’s, McDermott racked up 39 total points and did just enough damage on his own to get Creighton the win. D’Angelo Harrison led the way with 15 and Jakarr Sampson added 11 and 6 to pace the Red Storm.
The Red Storm have their backs to the wall and while any chance at making a run in the conference is pretty much out of play, the Red Storm should be giving their best effort in this contest. I like the combo of D’Angelo Harrison and Jakarr Sampson are the difference in this one as the St. John’s D overwhelms Marquette and their shaky offensive attack.
