One of the better Mountain West games played on Saturday will be between Utah State and Wyoming. The Aggies have lost four straight thanks to a tough schedule and the Cowboys have won four of their last five but just loss to a struggling Fresno State.
Utah State is much better than its 12-8 record indicates, it’s just played some of the better teams in the conference back-to-back. Still, it nearly upset San Diego State and lost to Boise State by just four points. In its last five games, it’s shooting a lights out 43 percent from beyond the arc and holding teams to just 41.4 percent from the field. Like I said, the numbers indicate the Aggies have just gotten a few tough breaks schedule wise.
Wyoming has perfected its slow paced tempo and is playing some of its best basketball of the season. Of course, it helps when your shooting percentage is 49.3 percent and you’re holding teams to just 58.8 points in the last five games. The Cowboys have been a solid defensive team all season long, but they are finally starting to execute offensively, making them a dangerous team in the Mountain West heading down the homestretch.
Although both teams are playing well, this is probably a spot where you want to take Utah State. It’s desperate to get back in the win column. I know it’s lost its last four road games and is only 4-4 against the number on the road, but sometimes you have to ignore the trends and go with the team that absolutely needs a victory.
I’ll happily take Utah State and the points.
