William & Mary and James Madison will play one another for the second time this season and Sunday afternoon. The two teams met earlier this season and the Tribe put the smack down with a score of 78-56. Still, James Madison has won four of the last five meetings straight up.
These two teams have completely different styles. James Madison wants to slow it down with defense and ball position, while William & Mary wants to play up-tempo and score a bunch of points. The Tribe are shooting a solid 46.6 percent from the field this season and averaging 73 points per game. The Dukes shoot only 41.7 percent and average 61.5 points.
However, the defenses are also in different worlds. William & Mary allows teams to shoot 46.9 percent from the field and average close to 72 points, while James Madison plays tight defense and holds teams to 42.2 percent. The Dukes have held three of their last four opponents to 56 or less points.
Considering there are better college basketball games on the schedule and something called the Super Bowl, I’d lay off this game and find something else. But if you must insist, go ahead and pick James Madison in pretty much a pick em. The Dukes don’t get many home games and should be excited for the rare chance to play in front of its home fans. I also like the difference in defense.
The home team is 5-1 against the spread in the last six meetings between these two teams. The Dukes are also 4-1 against the number in their last five games played on Sunday.
It’s always hard to shy away from the home team when both teams are just about even.
